First things first, if you havent read book 1, The Bone Charmer, stop reading cuz ~spoilers~ and go read it! Then come back and reas this review!🤣

So I really liked The Bone Charmer and couldn’t wait to dive back into this world.

This was a great conclusion to the duology! I love the magic involved in it and the idea of bone magic is so cool. We get to see even more of the ins and outs of how bone magic works which I loved. The different timelines scheme of it can be confusing so make sure you’re paying attention! I think the author did a great job in laying everything out and building this world up. Saskia has many obstacles to overcome in this, including grief and revenge, as she works to uncover what Latham has in store for after murdering her mother. The character development is much more in depth in The Bone Thief (as it should be ) and we get even more twists this go around!

It was dark, it was gritty, it was action packed! This beautifully written fantasy is a series you should definitely check out.

Kit Sweetly is working as a serving wench at The Castle, a medieval style family restaurant that offers a medieval experience alongside food and entertainment. But what Kit really wants is to move up and be a knight. Except her boss, and uncle, won’t allow it because of company policy. When she takes her brothers place as knight one evening, she reveals it was her at the end of her performance and everything changes.

I really enjoyed the premise of this book! I felt the execution of it could have been a bit better though.

What I liked:

*Kit was a great main character that you could root for

*this touches on family issues and handled it very well. I was feeling the feels.

* while tackling tough issues it also mixes in a lot of humor.

*theres a lot of neat historical facts all throughout!

What I did not like so much:

* the pace was a bit slow throughout it with a few parts where it sped up.

* the romance felt forced between Kitt and her interest. I wanted to love it but it just didn’t feel like the two should have romance and was kind of awkward.

That being said I did enjoy the story and its message! I felt it was empowering and moving. I am going to give it a 3 out of 5 stars

Favorite quotes

“But really, who was Joan? Mystic? Mad? Fiercely brave? Or just the right girl for the job at perhaps the wrong time?”

“I think again of all the women in the Middle Ages who were grounded, especially the Wife of Bath. Bold, brave, saucy and spirited. Traveling to pilgrimage sites was kind of her thing. Exactly the kind of woman I want to be. Minus the six husbands and all that.”

“And dont worry. The world wont break me. I’m the Girl Knight after all.”

So I just want to start off by saying I read Dark Shores (book numero uno) and loved it! So I was very excited going into book 2. Although this is technically the second book in the series it can be read first as Dark Shores and Dark Skies take place at the same time just with different people.

Dark Skies follows Lydia and Killian as circumstances cause their two paths to crash together. We flip back and forth between the twos perspective so we get a good look into each one’s thoughts. Lydia goes through some exponential growth as her journey pulls her into a world full of magic and bloodshed. She was q great MC and I loved everytime it switched to her POV.

The pace was absolutely perfect in this! I was able to finish it in two days( would have been one if my 4 year old didnt require my constant services🤣❤) and I am so excited for the third and final installment. I did enjoy Dark Skies more so than Dark Shores. I really loved Lydia and Killians characters. The romance in this was way more easy to root for and we really get to dive more into all the fine details regarding the magic systems and the Gods and whatnot. And there was plenty of action to keep you on the edge of your seat!

I am giving this a 4 out of 5 stars!

If the cover doesn’t draw you into Elysium Girls, the synopsis definitely will. This is pitched as Mad Max meets Caraval and there’s witchy girl gangs and demons and metal horses and WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED.

I was immediately intrigued by the first chapter and from there it only got better! This was such a different mashup of topics and I really enjoyed the uniqueness. The Dust Bowl and Great Depression setting with a town that has been thrust into a ten year battle with Life and Deaths supernatural army. I thought the world building was superb and pretty well drawn out. Kate Pentecost has such a great way of shaping a world it was hard to not be drawn in!

Our MC is Sal who was set to take over as leader for their town but events unfold and she finds herself exiled out into the unforgiving desert with a demon who longs to be human. The only way for them to survive is to join up with a gang of witches. Sal was a pretty good main character. She was easy to connect with and I love a main character that grows and finds herself throughout the book. The witchy girl gang was amaaaazing and one of my fave parts. They were so diverse and fun and a terrific addition to the story.

His heart was human now, through and through. And humanity, true humanity, he realized, was sacrifice.

I found this to be an overall very enjoyable historical/ dystopian/ fantasy read! I am giving it 4 out of 5 stars.

Kate Pentecost was born and raised on the Texas/Louisiana border, where ghostsand rural legends lurk in the pines and nothing iscompletely as it seemsShe holds an MFA in Writing for Children &Young Adults from Vermont Collegeof Fine Arts. She was recently nominated for a Rhysling award for her poem “SmallTown Witches.”Her debut novel, Elysium Girls, is forthcoming from Disney Hyperion in 2020 inprint and audio formats. She is obsessed with the Romantic Poetsand can be identified by the enormoustattoo of Percy Bysshe Shelley on her arm. “Sometimes a book will come along that will
surprise and captivate you, it will draw you into the story and make you a part
of the world. This is such a book!! This book was simply brilliant!!! I adored
every minute of it.” – Natalie, A Book Lover’s Life
“It was so refreshing to open this book up
to a new kind of story, with Native American characters taking center-stage and
diving into an entire mythos of lore, spiritual awakening, latent magical
powers, ageless sage leaders, and, naturally, angsty young people battling not
only big scary monsters, but themselves in a conflict of deep personal
struggle, of self discovery, of a painful past, and of a hopeful future.”
– Dustin Street, Big Small Town Books
“The amount of detail and heart Harris put
into her characters and setting make The Spirit Breather stand out from the
crowd. The story is wildly entertaining, the characters are easy to love, the
plot is carefully crafted, and the writing is lovely. This was a refreshing
read and I’m looking forward to more about Joseph and Emily in the
future.” – Amazon Customer

Release Date: April 7th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal

Synopsis: My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods…or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there’s Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn’t felt anything for a hundred years. But there’s something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what’s broken in me.

Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I’m wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.

My thoughts

A Vampire Novel A Day Keeps The Doctor Away. Or something like that.

This was a pretty enjoyable read! I’ve been in a total vampire story mood lately and this hit the spot! The story follows Grace, as her whole life gets upended and she is sent to the middle of nowhere Alaska to live with her uncle and her cousin, Macy. It just so happens her uncle is the headmaster of a prestigious boarding school. So prestigious in fact, there’s like no information on the internet about it. Grace takes it all in stride though, as there is no other choice but to do just that. But upon her arrival she is greeted with a not so welcome party, in that of Jaxon Vegas. His cold greeting to her ends with a grim warning that she does not belong there and basically she will not survive if she stays. I’d be like aight I’m out peace, but our girl Grace just sorta shrugs it off.

I will start off by saying I really loved the chapter headings. They were funny and catchy and I was eager to see each one. This is minor thing I know but hey, it’s the little things. Okay now moving on I will start with the characters. Macy is definitely up there with my favorites. She was funny, understanding, and just an all around cool chick. Our MC, Grace was just alright. I felt her naivety and oblivious-ness to be rather annoying at times and I was like girlfriend, open your eyes something is clearly different her. I don’t know. I mean I guess I wouldn’t want to believe something supernatural was going on at first either. Besides her naivety, she was pretty funny and sarcastic and I loved her inner dialogue.  Jaxon was a very mysterious, interesting character that I wish we could have gotten a bit more insight to. Also, I just am not the biggest fan of insta-love type deals. Ah I’m sorry okay! I really do try to like it, it just grates on my nerves. This luckily wasn’t a shoved in your face insta-love and it did drag out a bit. So maybe insta-love isn’t the correct term. Hmmm how about eventual love. Delayed love?  Eh no that’s not right either. Whatever, you get the picture.

Besides the few issues I had, I really did find the overall story and plot to be very entertaining. There was a wide variety of supernatural themes, not just vampires! Dragon Shifters! Witches! OOOohhhh very fun! I loved all the twists, even if some were predictable. Our villian was truly a villian and even though I did guess who it would be I still felt a bit of shock that I was actually right! This story kept me hooked and I couldn’t put it down until I finished. And that cliff hanger-whoo boy gimme gimme gimme book 2! I am giving this a  3.75 out of 5 stars. I was so close to 4 but just wasn’t quite there all the way.

3.75

Favorite Quotes

“Okay, kid. Here goes nothing!” Philip tells me. Which, by the way, definitely makes the top five things you don’t ever want to hear your pilot say while you’re still in the air.”

“One glance and I know this dark boy with the closed-off eyes and the fuck-you attitude isn’t the hero anyone’s story. Least of all mine.”

“My brain is imploding. I can feel it actually turnings to mush and folding in on itself under the weight of all this new information. I mean who needs LSD when you go to Monster High?”

” But I’ve learned enough about Jaxon to know that he will always cast himself in the most awful light. That he will always choose to see himself as the villain, even if he’s the victim. Especially if he’s the victim.”

Blog Tour | “5 Things I Didn’t Know About Being A Published Author” Guest Post by E. Latimer

blog tour, giveaway, guest post, Monthly New Releases, Review, Uncategorized

Hi everyone and welcome to my stop on the Witches of Ash and Ruin blog tour hosted by The FFBC! Today I’m so excited to be having a guest post by author E. Latimer on “5 things you didn’t know about being a published author” Keep reading for the behind the scenes life of the published life and then an amazing giveaway!

5 THINGS I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BEING A PUBLISHED AUTHOR

S 1) Waiting is everything.

I absolutely underestimated the amount of waiting that being an author would require. I think I pictured furiously typing away at my laptop, and then looking at the bookshelves proudly as my book was displayed. It just sort of clicked from one picture to the next in my mind, like a slideshow. There was no long, drawn out period of agonized waiting in between.

But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that publishing moves like a herd of turtles stampeding through molasses. First you wait while your book is on submission with publishing houses, then for your contract to come through, then another few months until you can announce. Then you wait two years for the book to come out. Repeat.

And that’s not counting all the waiting you do while people are reading your manuscript. Beta readers, your agent, that reviewer you really hope will love you. That author you hope will blurb you. It never really ends.

2) The bar can always be raised.

Before I was published, I got into this terrible habit of dreaming about life “after I get published”. Things along the lines of, “I’ll be truly happy when I get published” and “I’ll be more confident when I get published” and, “my hair will be super shiny and fall in perfect Disney princess waves at all times after I get published”.

Spoiler, none of that happens. I’m more satisfied, yes. And I’m even a little more sure of myself. I confidently write in “author” at the doctor’s office when they make me fill out the forms. I no longer flinch when I’m at a wedding and someone asks, “So what do you do?” But the problem is, once you reach the bar you’ve set for yourself, you tend to reach up and give it a little nudge. You know, just push that sucker up a little higher.

Maybe I won’t be truly happy until I sell the next book. Maybe my hair won’t be super shiny until I hit the NYT bestseller list (I hear that’s a common side effect).

Eventually I learned to catch myself thinking like this and now I attempt to put a stop to it. To coach myself to savour every milestone I reach, and to look back on the journey once in a while, to see how far I’ve come. It’s good to be driven, but it’s also good to celebrate your achievements.

3) Seeing your book on the shelf never gets old

I knew seeing my published book on the shelf for the first time would be exciting, but I didn’t know I would tear up the very first time in the middle of Indigo Books. I also didn’t know the feeling would never fully go away.

With Witches of Ash and Ruin out on the shelves now, I have two books out, and it never fails to make some kind of impact when I see them out in the wild. Sometimes I’m just wandering the bookstore and it almost takes me by surprise, other times I’m honing in on the “L” section like my cat going for that slice of cheese on the coffee table.

Either way, seeing my book there always feels a little surreal.

4) Imposter syndrome doesn’t go away

Maybe this is a symptom of above, but the same way I can never fully believe I made it onto shelves, wow, I also regularly wonder if at some point the people at the bookstore will realize I’m a total imposter and throw my books out.

Or that my publisher will wake up one morning and think, “Wait, why did we publish this person?” and the jig will finally be up.

Every time I’m in front of an audience, or on a panel, I wonder if I really have any right to be here. The first time a reader came up to me and said I was her favourite author I was completely stunned. My friend later told me that I just stared at her like a deer in the headlights. It was like my brain just stalled out, I couldn’t process it. Thankfully the poor kid’s mom had the presence of mind to ask for a photo, and my brain coughed back to life and I became a functioning human being again.

5) Each book is different, and it never stops being exciting.

The same way that seeing my book on the shelf never gets old, the writing process doesn’t seem to either. I don’t even know how many books I’ve written by now (many of them will never see the light of day) and every time I start another one, the process seems completely new. In a way, it’s a bit scary, I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. But it’s also exciting, because I never know what’s going to happen. If this book will be even more fun than the last one, if it will be even better. If the writing process is going to transcend every experience I’ve had up until then.

I thought things would be scarier when I got published, like maybe I’d be writing for other people instead of myself after that, but thankfully at this point that hasn’t happened. I still write for myself. I still write the story I want to tell and the one I’d want to read if I could pick anything in the world off the shelf.

I hope it keeps being that way no matter how much I publish. That no matter how many books I have on the shelf, the writing process will stay fresh and exciting. That I’ll always be eager to discover new worlds, and the potential the blank page has.

The mysterious ailment strikes all walks of life, from the posh high-end nightclub district to the homeless community. Its victims, driven to random acts of savagery, are drawing attention too fast to cover up.
Assigned to the case, Dahlia and her human partner Detective Alex Creed investigate the deaths. But all they have are questions, bodies, and a public on the verge of panic. Working behind the scenes with her self-appointed sidekick Casey Evans, Dahlia struggles to discover what, or who, is behind the alarming transformations.
As the violence spreads and the mystery unfolds, she wonders: Are the victims still human? Were they ever?

Nite Fire: Chain Reaction dives right back into the world of beloved Dahlia Nite, dragon shifter and all around badass, as she discovers a mysterious drug that is causing people to mutate and combust. Working with her human partner Detective Creed, it is a race against the clock as Dahlia tries to uncover who is behind the chaos.

I really liked this sequel, possibly more than the first book in the series! It was crazy full of even more action and all the twists and turns that I love. I felt the plot was fast-paced and gripping and couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen. Book 1 really helps set up this sequel so I would definitely suggest that you read that first before diving into this bad boy.

Once again I really enjoyed Cassandras audio narration! She was so fun to listen to and the voices she created for the story were great!

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by C.L. Schneider. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

SYNOPSIS: A slow-burn romance in a cutthroat kitchen! There’s more to becoming a top chef for 17-year-old Isabella Fields than just not getting chopped … especially when the chances of things heating up with an intriguing boy and becoming a food star in the kitchen are both on the chopping block.

Aspiring chef Isa’s family life has fallen apart after the death of her Cuban abuela and the divorce of her parents. She moves in with her dad and her new stepmom, Margo, in Lyon, France, where Isa feels like an outsider in her father’s new life. Isa balances her time between avoiding the awkward, “why-did-you-cheat-on-Mom” conversation with figuring out how a perpetually single woman can at least be a perpetually single chef.

The upside of Isa’s world being turned upside-down?

Her father’s house is located only 30 minutes away from the restaurant of world-famous Chef Pascal Grattard, who runs a prestigiously competitive international kitchen apprenticeship. The prize job at Chef Grattard’s renowned restaurant also represents a transformative opportunity for Isa who is desperate to get her life back in order—and desperate to prove she has what it takes to work in an haute kitchen. But Isa’s stress and repressed grief begin to unravel when the attractive, enigmatic Diego shows up unannounced with his albino dog.

How can Isa expect to hold it together when she’s at the bottom of her class at the apprenticeship, her new stepmom is pregnant, she misses her abuela dearly, and things with the mysterious Diego reach a boiling point?

When Isas grandmother passes away, her family goes to ruins. Add on top of that her parents divorce, Isa knows her life will never be as it once was. Going to live with her father and his new wife in Grance, the only upside to this turn of events is being a mere distance from a world renowned chefs kitchen. Hoping to piece back the pieces of her old life, Isa is anxious to excel in the lucrative international apprenticeship she was able to obtain in hopes of getting an internship with the renowned chef. But still dealing with grief of losing both her abuela and her parents divorce, Isa is finding it much harder to do than she originally thought.

Overall I did enjoy Salty Bitter Sweet. It was a sweet coming of age story. Isa had great growth as the story progressed and I loved all the FOOD in this. Mmm it made me so hungry. The slow burn romance was fun I just wish the love interest would have been someone other than her new stepmoms step son. This story touches on dealing with grief, the trials and tribulations of growing up, and family. While I found the first bit of the book hard to fully get into, I really started to get into it around the halfway mark. This was a quick read that gave me all the feels. I am giving it 3 out of 5 stars
