blog tour, giveaway, guest post, Monthly New Releases, Review, Uncategorized

Hi everyone and welcome to my stop on the Witches of Ash and Ruin blog tour hosted by The FFBC! Today I’m so excited to be having a guest post by author E. Latimer on “5 things you didn’t know about being a published author” Keep reading for the behind the scenes life of the published life and then an amazing giveaway!

5 THINGS I DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT BEING A PUBLISHED AUTHOR

S 1) Waiting is everything.

I absolutely underestimated the amount of waiting that being an author would require. I think I pictured furiously typing away at my laptop, and then looking at the bookshelves proudly as my book was displayed. It just sort of clicked from one picture to the next in my mind, like a slideshow. There was no long, drawn out period of agonized waiting in between.

But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that publishing moves like a herd of turtles stampeding through molasses. First you wait while your book is on submission with publishing houses, then for your contract to come through, then another few months until you can announce. Then you wait two years for the book to come out. Repeat.

And that’s not counting all the waiting you do while people are reading your manuscript. Beta readers, your agent, that reviewer you really hope will love you. That author you hope will blurb you. It never really ends.

2) The bar can always be raised.

Before I was published, I got into this terrible habit of dreaming about life “after I get published”. Things along the lines of, “I’ll be truly happy when I get published” and “I’ll be more confident when I get published” and, “my hair will be super shiny and fall in perfect Disney princess waves at all times after I get published”.

Spoiler, none of that happens. I’m more satisfied, yes. And I’m even a little more sure of myself. I confidently write in “author” at the doctor’s office when they make me fill out the forms. I no longer flinch when I’m at a wedding and someone asks, “So what do you do?” But the problem is, once you reach the bar you’ve set for yourself, you tend to reach up and give it a little nudge. You know, just push that sucker up a little higher.

Maybe I won’t be truly happy until I sell the next book. Maybe my hair won’t be super shiny until I hit the NYT bestseller list (I hear that’s a common side effect).

Eventually I learned to catch myself thinking like this and now I attempt to put a stop to it. To coach myself to savour every milestone I reach, and to look back on the journey once in a while, to see how far I’ve come. It’s good to be driven, but it’s also good to celebrate your achievements.

3) Seeing your book on the shelf never gets old

I knew seeing my published book on the shelf for the first time would be exciting, but I didn’t know I would tear up the very first time in the middle of Indigo Books. I also didn’t know the feeling would never fully go away.

With Witches of Ash and Ruin out on the shelves now, I have two books out, and it never fails to make some kind of impact when I see them out in the wild. Sometimes I’m just wandering the bookstore and it almost takes me by surprise, other times I’m honing in on the “L” section like my cat going for that slice of cheese on the coffee table.

Either way, seeing my book there always feels a little surreal.

4) Imposter syndrome doesn’t go away

Maybe this is a symptom of above, but the same way I can never fully believe I made it onto shelves, wow, I also regularly wonder if at some point the people at the bookstore will realize I’m a total imposter and throw my books out.

Or that my publisher will wake up one morning and think, “Wait, why did we publish this person?” and the jig will finally be up.

Every time I’m in front of an audience, or on a panel, I wonder if I really have any right to be here. The first time a reader came up to me and said I was her favourite author I was completely stunned. My friend later told me that I just stared at her like a deer in the headlights. It was like my brain just stalled out, I couldn’t process it. Thankfully the poor kid’s mom had the presence of mind to ask for a photo, and my brain coughed back to life and I became a functioning human being again.

5) Each book is different, and it never stops being exciting.

The same way that seeing my book on the shelf never gets old, the writing process doesn’t seem to either. I don’t even know how many books I’ve written by now (many of them will never see the light of day) and every time I start another one, the process seems completely new. In a way, it’s a bit scary, I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing. But it’s also exciting, because I never know what’s going to happen. If this book will be even more fun than the last one, if it will be even better. If the writing process is going to transcend every experience I’ve had up until then.

I thought things would be scarier when I got published, like maybe I’d be writing for other people instead of myself after that, but thankfully at this point that hasn’t happened. I still write for myself. I still write the story I want to tell and the one I’d want to read if I could pick anything in the world off the shelf.

I hope it keeps being that way no matter how much I publish. That no matter how many books I have on the shelf, the writing process will stay fresh and exciting. That I’ll always be eager to discover new worlds, and the potential the blank page has.

This is my first novel I’ve read by CL SCHNEIDER but certainly wont be my last. I was completely drawn in from the first chapter! The main protagonist of Nite Fire is a strong, badass female dragon shifter. Dahlia was once living in her magical realm of Drimera, but when events lead to her being sentenced to execution, she must flee to the human realm. And there she lives for 100 years bouncing around from town to town disposing of creatures from her world that threaten the humans. She is currently working alongside the police as an arson investigator, assisting them with jobs trying to keep her world apart from the human world. Soon though, her city is under attack from one of her kind. And as she struggles to uncover what is happening , she realizes she may just have to return home.

Nite Fire is basically an urban fantasy mixed with murder mystery and I absolutely loved it. It was full of twists and turns and the plot was dark and gritty and DRAGONS. I loved Dalia and her character overall and really enjoyed all the side characters. The character development was well fleshed out and it was easy to connect with the. With action abound, I was on the edge of my seat the whole story eagerly waiting to find out what was going to happen next.

The narrator for the audiobook version of Nite fire was Cassandra king and holy cow was it fun listening to! She did so great narrating and I love all the different voices characters were given. This was such an entertaining story all around and I can’t wait to dive into the next book!

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by C.L. Schneider. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Dahlia Nite, Protagonist of Nite Fire: Flash Point
  • You weren’t born on our world. Tell us about Drimera and your life there.
    • Drimera is ruled by the powerful dragon-queen Naalish. Though, she’s more of a tyrant than a queen. Below her are lesser dragon kings, each in charge of their own tribes. Laws are enforced by the Guild, a military style organization that sticks its nose in whatever business Naalish decides is hers. My kind, lyrriken, we do all the heavy lifting and all the dirty work. We’re born from the mating of a male dragon in human form and a human female. We can’t reproduce ourselves. When we try, a mutation occurs. And the creature we give birth to… It isn’t worth the risk. Our existence is entirely dependent on the dragons, and they make sure we know it. Which makes us born beholden and willing to serve. Free will is not a concept on my world.
    • The Guild chose me for their ranks when I was young. They educated and trained me. I worked hard for years to earn my place among them. Eventually, I gained command of my own squad, and the queen’s favor. Back then, it was all I’d ever wanted.
  • What do you miss the most about your home world?
    • The sense of belonging, the camaraderie that existed between lyrriken—especially between those of us with in the Guild. Aside from living, working, and training together, many of us grew up together. Our connections weren’t built on friendship or love. Most lyrriken find such emotions cumbersome and pointless. Our solidarity was based more on mutual respect, commonalities, instinct, and shared experiences. We had the same goals and hopes, the same love for our home, and the same desire to please our queen. Except, none of it was real. My entire upbringing was fabricated and manipulated. We were brainwashed, tortured, abused. And we asked for more because we believed we had the greatest purpose of all: to serve those who gave us life.
    • So, if you take away all that bullshit, what I miss most is the smell of the air. And the twin moons. With all my travels to other worlds, I’ve never seen their like. All I had to do was look up at the sky, and know I was home.
  • A lyrriken is half human and half dragon. Of all three species, which do you feel the closest to?
    • Humans. Though, if you’d told me a hundred years ago that would be my answer, I would have laughed at you. Fifty years ago, even twenty, I’m not sure I could have answered it at all. I was a fugitive when I left Drimera. My early years here consisted of one long blur of running. Then it was decades of investigations, fake IDs, cover-ups, shitty motels, truck stops, and dive bars. I struggled with things like connections and trust. I still do. But it’s different now. I’ve found something here in Sentinel City. For the first time, I’ve let myself form real connections. And they’ve rooted themselves deeper than I could have ever predicted.
    • It scares me, sometimes. That I have something to lose now. I have a life. It’s not one you would consider normal. I’m never going to have that. I’m not a 9-5, white-picket-fence kind of girl. I’m still investigating monster sightings and covering them up, but I work as a consultant for the SCPD now. I have a job, an apartment. I have friends who care about me.
    • It’s my version of a normal life. And I’ll do anything to protect it.
  • Lyrriken have special abilities, powers one might would consider “superhuman”. What gifts did you inherit from your dragon father? Which is most important to your survival?
    • All lyrriken are born with rapid healing, longevity, strength, heightened senses, and the ability to shift between our scaled lyrriken forms and human. We also have offensive powers such as: the generation and manipulation of fire, water, air, land, and a talent for crafting illusions. In rare cases, other psychic abilities can manifest.
    • I’m one of those rare cases. Aside from being able to produce and wield fire, I’m also empathic. Though fire is my go-to weapon in a fight, my empathic ability is directly related to my survival on this world. It’s allowed me to understand and experience the emotions of others on a level that’s foreign to other lyrriken. I can read, see, and experience only the negative (things like grief, regret, loneliness, fear, anger).
    • Humans are inherently emotional creatures. While I’ve come to know them well, they still manage to surprise me. And if a species can thrive this much, carrying around the weight of so much trauma, they’re worth my protection and respect. Neither of which I would feel so deeply if not for my empathic ability.
  • If you had to choose one of your forms for all eternity, which would you pick?
    • Damn. You don’t pull any punches, do you? The closest I’ve come to happiness is here in this place, in my human form, with these people. But if I had to pick one, it would have to be lyrriken. No matter how comfortable I’ve grown with my human half, no matter how much they’ve come to feel like home, I will never be one of them. I was born scaled. I don’t think I could live without that part of me.
  • Do you have any hobbies? What do you do for fun?
    • I’ve never had time for hobbies. Though my self-appointed sidekick, Casey Evans, has recently turned me onto the art of binge-watching. Does that count?
    • Fun is tracking down a mystery. Solving a case. Knowing you’ve saved lives. Maybe you see that as more rewarding than fun, but every mystery is its own roller coaster. And solving it comes with an adrenaline rush bigger than any ride in the amusement park.
  • Do you have a role model?
    • Not anymore. There was a time when I worshipped Queen Naalish. She was everything to me. She was everything I wanted to be. Until I realized she was a calculating, cold-hearted, manipulative bitch. That about did it for me and hero worship. But there are human traits I’ve come to admire and aspire to. My partner, Detective Alex Creed has a sense of morality and justice that just won’t quit. The energy and eagerness that Casey Evans brings to every situation, no matter how dark and dangerous it is; I wish I could see the world the way he does. I wish I could see myself the way he does.
  • What do you consider your greatest strength? What’s your greatest weakness?
    • I have the same answer for both those questions: I don’t give up. Depending on the circumstances, that’s a strength. Other times, not so much.
  • Do you have any quirks or bad habits?
    • Hmmm…maybe a few. Tequila, whiskey, beer, coffee, junk food, energy drinks—those things will kill you. I’m hard as hell on clothes and quick with a punch. I drive too fast. I curse like a ship-full of drunken sailors. Creed will tell you I crack bad jokes at highly inappropriate times. But I mostly do it to piss him off.
  • If you knew you were going to die in 24 hours, what would you do in the time you had left?
    • Well, I wouldn’t tell anyone my time was up. Being empathic, I deal with enough negative emotions on a daily basis. Processing someone else’s grief over my impending death—no thanks. I’ll pass.
    • As far as what I’d do with the time… I’d grab an extra-large coffee and walk the streets of Sentinel City a while. Alone. At night. Just soaking it all up one last time. Then I’d grab the few friends I’ve made here and bring them to my favorite bar: Nadine’s. The place itself is nothing special. Just a dark, dingy, little jazz club. But the tequila is top shelf. And the ice cream is to die for. Okay, maybe the bad jokes aren’t just for Creed.

Title: Wild, Wild Rake
Authot: Janna Macgregor
Genre: Historical Romance
Series:
Release Date:
Publisher: St Martin’s Press

Synopsis: Wild, Wild Rake, the next sweeping, emotional, witty, and sharp romance in the Cavensham Heiresses series from beloved author Janna MacGregor.

Her first marriage was an epic fail.

Lady Avalon Warwyk never did love her husband. Arrogant, selfish, and cruel, it’s a blessing when she’s widowed and left to raise her son all by herself. Finally, Avalon can live freely and do the work she loves: helping fallen women become businesswomen. She’s lived these past ten years with no desire to remarry?that is, until Mr. Devan Farris comes to town.

Can he convince her to take another chance at happily ever after?

Devan Farris–charming vicar, reputed rake, and the brother of Avalon’s son’s guardian–is reluctantly sent to town to keep tabs on Avalon and her son. Devan wishes he didn’t have to meddle in her affairs; he’s not one to trod on a woman’s independent nature and keen sense of convictions. But she’ll have nothing to do with a vicar with a wild reputation–even though he’s never given his heart and body to another. If only he could find a way to show Avalon who he really is on the inside–a good, true soul looking for its other half. But how can he prove that he wants to love and care for her. . .until death do they part?

This was a fun and sweet historical romance!

The story begins with our main character, Avalon who is trapped in a marriage with Richard, a man whom her parents picked for her to marry and who is an absolute garbage person of a man. When he meets his demise, Avalon is free to raise their son on her own and doing what she pleases. But then Devan Farris is sent to keep an eye on her and her son. Not quite wanting to do just that, Devan reluctantly agrees to and tutor her son and perhaps do some digging on Avalon, or as he likes to call her, Ms Warlock. But the longer he’s their the more sparks fly and the harder it becomes for them to fight their feelings for each other.

Ah. Don’t mind me I’m just over here swooning. I loved this romance! Devan and Avalon were so perfect for each other! They start out as enemies and their banter is so. fun. Enemies to lovers is one of those tropes that I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of🤷‍♀️ Avalon and Devan each go through a pretty big growth as the story goes on and I was here for it, particularly Devans growth. Although the beginning was slow the pace really started to pick up and pull you in after a few chapters in. I found myself grinning like a fool by the end.

Um wow. I am still reeling from this amazing story. I was completely hooked from the first sentence.

The story starts out with our MC, Alessandra, talking about murdering her first boyfriend when she was only 15 because he didn’t love her. Um crazy right???!

Sorry not sorry but I have a weak spot for morally grey characters and hoo doggy this story did not disappoint. Alessandra is an ambitious, intelligent woman who knows what she wants and how to do it. She was fierce and funny and I loved her as a main character. I felt the plot was quick paced and everything was well fleshed out. I found myself totally wrapped up in this world and I didn’t want the book to end.

Overall, I devoured this book in one sitting and recommend for fans of dark fantasy! 😈I will definitely be reading more from Tricia.

Favorite Quotes

“His last word was my name . His last thought was of me. I won.”

“Who in the world would steal and then not keep the riches for themselves? That’s just bad business. Someone that stupid must surely be caught soon.”

“Alessandra Stathos, that’s positively despicable.” He says the words like they’re the highest compliment he can give me. “You are an absolute gem, do you know that?”

“I know when I’ve been beaten, and I have barely even started.”

“I handled Hektor as I have handled everything else in my life: alone and with the utmost thoroughness.””

The Seventh Sun was an enthralling start to a brand new series! I completely enjoyed it from start to finish.

Based on Aztec and Mayan culture, The Seventh Sun follows the story of Mayana, the daughter of a lord and Ahkin, the prince/soon to be king. Unable to be king until he marries, Ahkin holds a competition to determine his future bride. Mayana is amongst the other 6 noble daughters competing for his hand. But this is not a friendly competition. It’s a brutal trial that if you lose, you die.

I really loved the magical aspects of this! I am just a sucker for elemental based magic and loved the system that the author built for it. So unique! The world building was exciting and the plot held my attention throughout. The romance was delightful and I loved it. I will say this felt more like a New Adult book rather than Young Adult🤷‍♀️ overall, this book was full of fantasy, action, romance, and a world you will love to get lost in. I give it 5 out of 5 stars. I cant wait for the sequel!

Night Spinner(Night Spinner #1)

byAddie Thorley

Publisher: Page Street Kids

Release Date:February 11th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Retellings

Synopsis: A must-read for fans of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse, transforming The Hunchbackof Notre Dame into a powerful tundra-inspired epic. Before the massacre at Nariin, Enebish was one of the greatest warriors in the SkyKing’s Imperial Army: a rare and dangerous Night Spinner, blessed with the abilityto control the threads of darkness. Now, she is known as Enebish the Destroyer―amonster and murderer, banished to a monastery for losing control of her power andannihilating a merchant caravan.Guilt stricken and scarred, Enebish tries to be grateful for her sanctuary, until heradoptive sister, Imperial Army commander Ghoa, returns from the war front with atantalizing offer. If Enebish cancapture the notorious criminal, Temujin, whose bandof rebels has been seizing army supply wagons, not only will her crimes be pardoned, she will be reinstated as a warrior.Enebish eagerly accepts. But as she hunts Temujin across the tundra, she discoversthe tides of war have shifted, and the supplies he’s stealing are the only thing keepingthousands of shepherds from starving. Torn between duty and conscience, Enebishmust decide whether to put her trust in the charismatic rebel or her beloved sister. No matter who she chooses, an even greater enemy is advancing, ready to bring theempire to its knees.

The Night Spinner was a captivating fantasy novel that is also a Hunchback of Notre Dame retelling, say whaaaaaaat. Honestly as soon I saw that I was immediately all for it 🙌.

The world of The Night Spinner was lavish and well drawn out. I loved the authors tone. We are also given a fair amount of characters to fall in love with. I’d say our MC,Enebish, was my absolute fave. She is constantly growing and changing and I love that in a character. We’ve also got villians, morally grey characters (such a sucker for them tbh😏😏), and a sweet bby cinnamon roll.

Whilst starting out slow, the plot picks up pace once you’re a few chapters in and then you won’t be able to put it down. Watch out for the plot twists they will getcha!! Overall, I adored this retelling and cant wait for the next book( yes this is a DUOLOGY)

This was a fast paced, high action, science fiction novel that left me so curious as to what was going to happen next. All the characters were well drawn out and complex and the world building was unique and . I do wish some parts of the world were elaborated on more(mainly the time travel aspects) We’ve got time travel, some romance, mysteries, and lots of action. I thought some parts were predictable but it was an overall riveting read.

Title: The Queen’s Assassin (Queen’s Secret #1)

by Melissa de la Cruz
Publisher: G. P. Putnam’s Sons
Release Date: February 4th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis: Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Red Queen, this is the first novel in a sweeping YA fantasy-romance duet about a deadly assassin, his mysterious apprentice, and the country they are sworn to protect from #1 NYT bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia’s deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he’s the Guild’s most dangerous member and the Queen’s one and only assassin. He’s also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow–to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.

Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts–to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she’ll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.

When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they’re forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they’ll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they’ll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen’s Secret series.

My thoughts

The Queens Assassin follows the story of Shadow and Cal, two strangers who are thrown together by a twist of fate. Shadow has grown up outside the palace, with her two ‘Aunts’, learning the ways of the Guild and wanting nothing more than to join its ranks. Calendon Holt is known as the Assassin for the queen, but little else is known besides that. When the two are both requested to come to the palace, the story really gets going.

Ok I will start with the things I liked! I love the world building in this! I really enjoyed the two main characters and their banter with each other. Their romance was entertaining to read mixed with all the political intrigue. This was action-packed that has a few moments that will keep you on your toes. This was a fun fantasy read that I went through quite quickly.

Now the things I didnt enjoy. The POV shifts were a bit confusing between Shadow and Cal. Shadows POV is first person whereas Cals POV was third person. I thought this was quite disconcerting going back and forth between the POV changes. Another thing is the repetition. There was a lot of phrases repeated. Although it was an information dump starting out, as the story goes on it gets much easier to follow and enjoy.

Overall, this was a compelling YA fantasy romance. I am giving it a 3 out of 5 stars.

FAVORITE QUOTES

“My aunts taught me that sometimes when the world is too much, when life starts to feel overwhelming, we must strip away what’s unnecessary, seek out the quiet, and listen to the dirt and trees.”

The problem is, while he’s come to the grudging realization that she may be useful, it’s clear that as much as she might admire him, she also finds him deeply exasperating. So he isn’t quite willing to allow her the satisfaction of being right so she could hold something over him.”

“I’m almost tempted to go back to my aunts’ farm and then on to the palace, where at least I can live out my days in comfort and warmth. But I can’t even pretend to want that. If I’m being honest, that’s still less appealing than sticking out the journey ahead with my knight in shining armor, Sir Full of Himself.”

Below is based on Inuit Mythology and takes place in the Arctic. While out hunting for her family the day, Apaay learns that dusaster has struck and her sisters face has been stolen by a demon. Apaay decides to track the demon down and get her sisters face back before it is gone forever.

This was such a unique premise! I’ve never read any books inspired by Inuit mythology and I found it all to be so fascinating. I liked all the characters in it, especially Apaay, our MC. Her growth in this was ah👏maz👏ing👏 I was not sure how much I liked her when the story first started but as she begins the trials of the labyrinth our girl really starts to grow on you. While I enjoyed almost all aspects of the story I think the one part I was not a fan of was the repetition that goes on. Apaay spends a lot of time walking by herself and talking with herself and it just felt monotonous. The world building was beautifully written and it felt like I was freezing my bum off in the chilly lands of the Arctic. Haunting and dark, I really enjoyed this story of the sisterly bond and how far one would go for her loved one. I will be eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.

Blog Tour| Seven Deadly Shadows Review + Favorite Quotes

blog tour, giveaway, Monthly New Releases, Review, Uncategorized
Title: Seven Deadly Shadows
By Courtney Alameda & Valynne E. Maetani
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: January 28th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal
Synopsis: Kira Fujikawa has always been a girl on the fringe. Bullied by her peers and ignored by her parents, the only place Kira’s ever felt at home is at her grandfather’s Shinto shrine, where she trains to be a priestess. But Kira’s life is shattered on the night her family’s shrine is attacked by a vicious band of yokai demons. With the help of Shiro—the shrine’s gorgeous half-fox, half-boy kitsune—Kira discovers that her shrine harbors an ancient artifact of great power . . . one the yokai and their demon lord, Shuten-doji, will use to bring down an everlasting darkness upon the world.
Unable to face the Shuten-doji and his minions on her own, Kira enlists the aid of seven ruthless shinigami—or death gods—to help stop the brutal destruction of humankind. But some of the death gods aren’t everything they initially seemed, nor as loyal to Kira’s cause as they first appeared.
With war drawing nearer by the day, Kira realizes that if this unlikely band of heroes is going to survive, they’re going to have to learn to work together, confront their demons, and rise as one to face an army of unimaginable evil.

Alright I’m a sucker for books mixed with mythology and this one hit the spot! The book starts off on the ground running with a huge battle at Kira’s grandfather’s shrine. That night changes her life forever. The pace of the books pretty consistent throughout the rest of it as we are given lots of action. There’s magic, creepy monsters, a wee bit of romance (slightly rushed/predictable but still good), wonderful character development, and of course, mythology! I loved how our MC went from being a timid character to a strong, badass, fighting hero. I was completely immersed in the story the whole time and did not want it to end. I will definitely be looking forward to any future books written by these two!

FAVORITE QUOTES

I am a girl surrounded by monsters and ghosts from an ancient world. Most days, they scare me less than people do.

When people know your weaknesses, they can exploit them. Or in the very least, they’ll think less of you for them.“This mutt managed to set your precious palace on fire,” I say, drawing my sword. The dying sunlight glints off its blade. “I’d be careful, Tamamo-no-Mae. Even mutts have teeth.”“I’m not ashamed of who I am,” I tell her, taking the shards of the Kusanagi no Tsurugi from my back and resting them on the altar. “Not anymore.”
