Violet is an orphan and pretty much out of the system now that she’s turned 18. But then her whole life changes when she receives news that she has been the one selected for the Princess Ballot. The Ballot is a lottery type deal that millions of displaces children enter at the chance of being the one chosen to attend the prestigious Arbon Academy, a school for the worlds elite, including royalty, the rich, and powerful. Once every 5 years the Ballot takes place and Violet can’t believe that she’s the one that’s been chosen this time around. Not quite sure what is waiting for her at the academy, Violet is eager to start her new life and the chance to change her whole future. Expecting a bit of backlash from the students at Arbon for her poor background, the welcome she gets once there is far worse than she imagined. She quickly realizes that she is just going to have to stay off the radar and get through the 4 years as quietly as possible. But that turn out to be a bit difficult with the attention of the Princes on her.

Mattie and Violet were probably my favorite characters in this whole story. Violet is tough and knows how to take care of herself and Mattie was the no nonsense, funny friend that Violet makes upon her arrival at Arbon. Their dynamic was so fun to read and their banter had me giggling at times. ( The GREAT scene, omg) The other characters were well developed and it was enjoyable getting to learn bits and pieces of their story. But it is definitely in bits and pieces. Jaymin and Tate are wonderful at dangling little tidbits here and there that will keep you around dying for more.

This was a quick, fun read that I plowed through in a day. BUT OMG THAT CLIFFHANGER MADE ME SCREECH. I am super looking forward to book two! Recommended for fans of Contemporary Dark Fantasy, futuristic plots, SECRETS EVERYWHERE, and college romances.
