Synopsis: Persephone is the Goddess of Spring by title only. The truth is, since she was a little girl, flowers have shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hopes to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist.
Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible.
After a chance encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead and the terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever.
The bet does more than expose Persephone’s failure as a Goddess, however. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows—and it’s forbidden.
“My dear you are at war with yourself. It has created darkness within you.” “Darkness?” “Anger, fear, resentment,” Hecate said. “If you do not free yourself first,no one else can.”
Persephone is the Goddess of Spring- except she doesn’t have any powers. Because of this, she has chosen to live life as a mortal going to school and even getting an internship at a newspaper as a journalist. Even though she is living out on her own she is still under her mothers strict thumb. And she is just itching to rebel. When her best friend Lexa comes up with tickets to the lucrative night club owned by Hades, Persephone’s moment to rebel has arrived. Little does she know just how much that night will forever change her life. When Persephone accidentally strikes up a contract with Hades, she is furious. The contract is impossible- she must create something living in The Underworld and she only has six months to do it.
“They say Hades is protective of his realm, and while that is true, it isn’t about power. He cares for his people, protects them, and he takes it personally if anyone is harmed. If you belong to him, he will tear the world apart to save you.”
I loved this so much! I am a total sucker for Greek Mythology and this Hades and Persephone retelling was amaze-balls. The world-building was so cool! Set in a modern world, except the Gods descended on our home one day and totally transformed it. Hades is the God of the Underworld and one of the most powerful of the Gods. He is also the most secretive of the Gods with no one really knowing all that much about it him other than he is the God of the Dead. Which leads to a lot of conclusions being drawn about him. Persephone has heard her whole life growing up about how awful of a man he is and that she must never, ever go near him. Which of course, makes her want to see him all that much more.
Whewie and when they did meet! Can you say chemistryyyyyyy. I loved both of them, especially how much they grew and changed right before our eyes. Persephone goes from being a small, ordinary woman to the awesome, badass Goddess she is. And Hades! Persephone really helps with changing his view points on the mortal world, even going so far as influencing him to start his own charity for the mortals. They are so different yet so alike. One of my favorite scenes was when Persephone was teaching Hades her favorite hobby because he wanted to learn. SwooooOOooon. Besides the main characters we are also treated to delightful side characters. I loved each and every one, good and bad. You will hate the bad ones, and find yourself rooting for everyone else.
“It had always been there, a dark seed, fueling her dreams and her passions, and Hades had roused it, charmed it, fed it.”
Beware! If you start this you will find yourself completely consumed by this book and unable to put down. Recommended for those who like Greek retellings, ROMANCE, beautiful world building, and dark fantasy. I give this 5 out of 5 stars and am eagerly awaiting A Touch Of Ruin!
