Synopsis:“If you see a beast, and you have the shot, don’t hesitate. Kill it.”

For seventeen years, fees have lived separate from beasts. The division of the sexes has kept their world peaceful. Glori Rhodes is like most other fees her age. She adores her neighborhood’s abandoned Costco, can bench her body weight, and she knew twenty-seven beast counter attack moves by the time she was seven. She has never questioned the separation of the sexes or the rules that keep her post-nuclear hometown safe. But when her mother secretly gives birth to a baby beast, Glori grows to love the child and can’t help wondering: What really is the difference between us and them?

When her brother, at the age of five, is snatched in a vicious raid, Glori and her best friend, Su, do the unthinkable – covertly infiltrate the City of Beasts to get him back. What’s meant to be a smash-and-grab job quickly becomes the adventure of a lifetime as the fees team up with a fast-talking, T-shirt cannon wielding beast named Sway, and Glori starts to see that there’s more to males, and her own history, than she’s been taught. Glori, Sway, and a motley cohort of friends will go to the ends of the earth to find her little brother. And maybe save their divided world while they’re at it

My thoughts

What a fantastic dystopian novel! City of Beasts is about a not so far away post apocalyptic Earth. Taking place in Buffalo, NY the city has divided itself- men(beasts) on one side of the river, and women(fees) on the other side. Growing up this has been all that Glori has known. Until her mother gives birth to a Fee and she begins to wonder what’s so wrong with them after all. When her brother is taken in a raid from the beasts, Glori and her bff, Su decide to go to the where the Beasts live and bring him back home.

I love a good dystopian novel that really makes you think, what if??? Wang did an excellent job of creating an apocolyptic world that captivated me from the very first page. I loved all the kick-ass characters! We not only have a complex main character, but the side characters are wonderfully developed so you can’t help but get attached.

City of Beasts was full of humor, a tiny dash of romance(oh lala), some crazy topics that really make you think, action, and thrills! I was so sad when I finished it!

About Corrie:

Corrie Wang is passionate about libraries, recycling, and eating all the food, everywhere. Corrie grew up in Buffalo but spent her formative years in Brooklyn, where one of her last paying gigs was managing a three-story nightclub on the Lower East Side.

Writing to fix things that make her angry and explore things that frighten her, Corrie’s novels are about girls unapologetically conquering scenarios they should have little control over. Tired of seeing women and girls lose in this culture – spoiler – they never do in her stories.

Her debut novel, The Takedown was chosen as one of the best books of 2017 by the New York Public Library and a 2018 YALSA selection for Best Fiction for Young Adults. City of Beasts is her second novel.

Seeing, as Corrie wrote an entire novel about the freakiness and perils of socializing too much on the internets her existence there is haphazard at best. Now, more than ever, she feels it is time for everyone to look up. (Also stand up, step up, and eat up.

Woot!) That being said, you may follow her poor photography skillz on INSTAGRAM.

AND P.S. Wang rhymes with ‘song’ y’all.

Review: Deviation by Christine Manzari

Title: Deviation

Author: Christine Manzari

Genre: YA/Sci-Fi

Release Date: August 8th, 2013

Synopsis: “Being a Sophisticate of the Program seems like it’d be a pretty sweet deal: a little genetic alteration and anyone can be smarter, faster, and stronger. It’s a dream come true. All you have to give up is your freedom.

Cleo is a Sophisticate and she has a bright future in the Program. But she has a secret. When she gets upset, bad things happen. Explosive things. Things she can’t control.

When her secret is discovered, she’s sent to the Academy to train in the military branch of the Program. She’s destined to be a human weapon in the war that’s been going on since Wormwood occurred nearly 30 years ago. She soon learns that although her ability is unique, there are others like her — other Sophisticates with lethal skills and odd code names like Archerfish and Mimic Octopus.

Immersed in a dangerous game of supernatural powers and dubious motives, Cleo doesn’t know who to trust. Ozzy, the annoyingly attractive cadet who has perfect aim in weapons class and deviant lips behind closed doors, begs her not to use her powers. He’s the golden boy of the Program, but can she trust him? Or will she find herself a target, caught in his crosshairs?”

My thoughts (1)

After terrorist attacks ravage the United States, a program emerges that enhances humans into Sophisticates: genetically altered humans that are faster, stronger, and smarter than the average human.  Cleo just wants to be average but being in the Sophisticates program she is anything but. Aside from being a Sophisticate, Cleo begins to show that she might be much more. When her rage burns her room and all her belongings to ash, she is sent to the Academy, a military school for special Sophisticates. Thrown into a rigorous training and new lifestyle from what she previously knew, Cleo soon begins to discover that she is not the only Sophisticate with other unique talents.

“You may not be able to control your future, but you can control how you handle it. Don’t let the fear rule you, rule the fear.”

What an excellent dystopian novel! Action-packed with plenty of drama, Deviation has been one of the best dystopian novels I’ve read this year! With super powers, romance, and ROLLER DERBY, once I started I could not put this down. Seriously though, how many books have you read with roller derby in them? I never knew I wanted it until now.

Cleo is a tough chick who was easy to relate to (except for the whole I-will-blow-you-into-smithereens-if-you-make-me-angry thing she had going on.) Although it would be cool to be able to blow things up with just your mind.

I really enjoyed the friendships that Cleo developed while at the Academy.  The romance between Cleo and the resident bad boy, Ozzy, was an insta-love and I am not the biggest fan of those ,however, it was still entertaining to read their back-and-forth banter. There were also a few phrases I noticed that were said somewhat repeatedly although now that I’m trying to think of what they were I’m having a brain fart. The pacing of events unfolding was executed perfectly and I found myself eagerly turning the pages to find out what happens next. There were a few topics that I wanted to know more about ( Cleo’s parents?) but since this is only the first in the series, I am hopeful to learn more in the second. I give this 4 out of 5 stars! I can’t wait to begin the next in this series!

Review: Blind The Eyes

Blind the Eyes by K.A. Wiggins is a YA/Fantasy novel and the first in the Thread of Dreams series.

Synopsis: In a world where hope kills and dreams are deadly, obedience is the only way to survive. But when one girl learns her society’s absolute control and guarantee of safety are both illusions, she risks her hard-won status, her home and her life to rebel and expose its lies.

When haunted teen Cole discovers the state’s guarantee of safety from the nightmarish Mara in exchange for obedience is a fraud, she realizes hers isn’t the only life at stake. Cole needs allies to help her escape execution by nightmare and expose the lies. Now, with a ghost at her back, enforcers in pursuit, and a charismatic rebel leader gaslighting her, Cole must figure out who to trust to bring down the state and stop the dying before the nightmares eat her alive.

A YA dark fantasy about identity, trauma & taking back your choices. Ghosts and world-monsters in post-eco-disaster Vancouver.

My thoughts

I really wanted to like this book! I thought the cover was awesome and the plot summary seemed very intriguing-however, I just could not get into this book. I found myself getting confused as to what was happening more often than not and had to go back and re-read portions to try and figure out what was going on. Along with the very complicated story line, I also had a strong disliking towards the main character, Cole.  The authors writing style is very visual and different, I loved that she created such a unique world. I feel I would’ve enjoyed this more if it wasn’t so confusing so with that I’ve rated this 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Untamed by Madeline Dyer

Untamed by Madeline Dyer is a YA Dystopian novel and the first of the Untamed series.

In the not so distant future, the world is divided into two groups. The Enhanced, humans who have become addicted to taking chemical augmenters that take away all negative traits and feelings that humans possess, and the Untamed, the remaining humans who have yet been converted. Set on converting all Untamed to be Enhanced, the Untamed are forced to live on the move so as not to be caught and have their humanity stripped from them.

Growing up constantly on the run from the Enhanced, Seven knows just how destructive these artificial emotions are and has seen first-hand the damage it’s done to loved ones. When Seven is taken and converted by the Enhanced, she finds herself addicted to the augmenters herself. Once finally rescued and returned back to her group, she finds herself constantly craving the augmenters and the sense of security(even knowing it wasn’t real) she felt when with the Enhanced.  Struggling to remember who she is and what she’s meant to be, Seven finds herself conflicted with choosing the easy way and being Enhanced and choosing the difficult way of being Untamed.

My thoughts

I looooooove dystopian books and the plot of this was so interesting! The heroine is so realistic and imperfect that it makes her very relatable. This was a very fast-moving, very action-packed novel(almost too fast and action-packed, is that a thing? I don’t know) with some pretty good twists. There were ,however, some aspects that I found to be fairly confusing, such as the whole deal with the spirits and the constant back and forth from reality and Seven’s visions. Overall, I am excited to read what else happens to Seven and Corin and everyone else. Bring on the next book!
