Synopsis: Life is easy in 2647, unless you’re a Diseased One…
On the morning of her 16th birthday, Hollis Timewire receives the worst possible news. She can’t become a citizen of the world. She’s a Diseased One.
Born with a biomarker that bestows dangerous, brain-altering powers, Hollis is forced to hide underground with other Diseased Ones, who believe that the government falsified history to cover up their genocide.
Now Hollis must discover the truth, and is willing to risk anything, including her powers, to go back home.
On the morning of her 16th birthday, Hollis is set to take the test that will determine whether she is a ‘diseased one’ or not. If not, which is likely the case as there hasn’t been a diseased one in forever, she will finally graduate and start her life. But all her plans go out the door when it’s finally her turn to take the test and it turns out she is a Diseased One. While escaping Hollis, unleashes her dormant powers that can control what others do. She is able to make it to safety she believes but gets betrayed by those she trusted. At the last second, Hollis is able to escape underground with a group of other Diseased Ones. Going from a society where emotions are forced to be repressed to one where emotions are just out in the open, Hollis must learn to adapt to this new way of life while also uncovering the truth about the world she thought she knew.
I really enjoyed Danielle’s writing style! It was very detailed and really throws you into the story and what is happening. The storyline is well developed and quick-paced. There’s an assortment of different powers that the Diseased have and it was fun reading about them! I was a big fan of our MC’s evolution throughout the book of dealing with emotions and learning from them as well as unlearning all she was brainwashed into believing. Hollis turns into quite a badass.
The Diseased Ones was a great dystopian novel that pulled me in from the first page. I am a fan of dystopian stories and this did not disappoint. This ends on a cliffhanger so prepare for that! I am giving it a 4 out of 5 stars. Can’t wait for whats next for Hollis!
