Title: The Queen’s Assassin (Queen’s Secret #1)

by Melissa de la Cruz
Publisher: G. P. Putnam’s Sons
Release Date: February 4th 2020

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

Synopsis: Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Red Queen, this is the first novel in a sweeping YA fantasy-romance duet about a deadly assassin, his mysterious apprentice, and the country they are sworn to protect from #1 NYT bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz.

Caledon Holt is the Kingdom of Renovia’s deadliest weapon. No one alive can best him in brawn or brains, which is why he’s the Guild’s most dangerous member and the Queen’s one and only assassin. He’s also bound to the Queen by an impossible vow–to find the missing Deian Scrolls, the fount of all magical history and knowledge, stolen years ago by a nefarious sect called the Aphrasians.

Shadow has been training all her life to follow in the footsteps of her mother and aunts–to become skilled enough to join the ranks of the Guild. Though magic has been forbidden since the Aphrasian uprising, Shadow has been learning to control her powers in secret, hoping that one day she’ll become an assassin as feared and revered as Caledon Holt.

When a surprise attack brings Shadow and Cal together, they’re forced to team up as assassin and apprentice to hunt down a new sinister threat to Renovia. But as Cal and Shadow grow closer, they’ll uncover a shocking web of lies and secrets that may destroy everything they hold dear. With war on the horizon and true love at risk, they’ll stop at nothing to protect each other and their kingdom in this stunning first novel in the Queen’s Secret series.

My thoughts

The Queens Assassin follows the story of Shadow and Cal, two strangers who are thrown together by a twist of fate. Shadow has grown up outside the palace, with her two ‘Aunts’, learning the ways of the Guild and wanting nothing more than to join its ranks. Calendon Holt is known as the Assassin for the queen, but little else is known besides that. When the two are both requested to come to the palace, the story really gets going.

Ok I will start with the things I liked! I love the world building in this! I really enjoyed the two main characters and their banter with each other. Their romance was entertaining to read mixed with all the political intrigue. This was action-packed that has a few moments that will keep you on your toes. This was a fun fantasy read that I went through quite quickly.

Now the things I didnt enjoy. The POV shifts were a bit confusing between Shadow and Cal. Shadows POV is first person whereas Cals POV was third person. I thought this was quite disconcerting going back and forth between the POV changes. Another thing is the repetition. There was a lot of phrases repeated. Although it was an information dump starting out, as the story goes on it gets much easier to follow and enjoy.

Overall, this was a compelling YA fantasy romance. I am giving it a 3 out of 5 stars.

FAVORITE QUOTES

“My aunts taught me that sometimes when the world is too much, when life starts to feel overwhelming, we must strip away what’s unnecessary, seek out the quiet, and listen to the dirt and trees.”

The problem is, while he’s come to the grudging realization that she may be useful, it’s clear that as much as she might admire him, she also finds him deeply exasperating. So he isn’t quite willing to allow her the satisfaction of being right so she could hold something over him.”

“I’m almost tempted to go back to my aunts’ farm and then on to the palace, where at least I can live out my days in comfort and warmth. But I can’t even pretend to want that. If I’m being honest, that’s still less appealing than sticking out the journey ahead with my knight in shining armor, Sir Full of Himself.”

Below is based on Inuit Mythology and takes place in the Arctic. While out hunting for her family the day, Apaay learns that dusaster has struck and her sisters face has been stolen by a demon. Apaay decides to track the demon down and get her sisters face back before it is gone forever.

This was such a unique premise! I’ve never read any books inspired by Inuit mythology and I found it all to be so fascinating. I liked all the characters in it, especially Apaay, our MC. Her growth in this was ah👏maz👏ing👏 I was not sure how much I liked her when the story first started but as she begins the trials of the labyrinth our girl really starts to grow on you. While I enjoyed almost all aspects of the story I think the one part I was not a fan of was the repetition that goes on. Apaay spends a lot of time walking by herself and talking with herself and it just felt monotonous. The world building was beautifully written and it felt like I was freezing my bum off in the chilly lands of the Arctic. Haunting and dark, I really enjoyed this story of the sisterly bond and how far one would go for her loved one. I will be eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.

Title: Wardens of Eternity

Author: Courtney Moulton

Publisher: Blink YA

Genre: YA Fantasy

SYNOPSIS: Magic and magical creatures. Immortal gods and goddesses. History and mythology. Strap in for this action-packed YA novel that takes place over the days leading up to World War II, when Ziva must rely on her wit and magic to outmaneuver Nazis and ancient Egyptian gods to prevent global destruction.

Ziva has one memory of her parents, made the day they abandoned her on the streets of New York City when she was three years old. They left her with only a memory and a promise that she had a great and terrible destiny.

Fifteen years later, Ziva discovers that destiny includes powers that she doesn’t understand and can barely control. Her magic attracts vicious, otherworldly monsters, and eventually compatriots to help her fight them. Sayer and Nasira know the secrets Ziva doesn’t; that Ziva is descended from Egyptian royalty and in possession of ancient magic passed down from the time of the gods. They promise to teach Ziva to control her magic and to give her the family she’s always yearned for.

But trouble is brewing in the world around them; darkness is descending on Hitler’s Germany, threatening World War II. As the last heir of a revered Egyptian queen, Ziva is the only one with the power to prevent another costly global conflict. As Ziva navigates her newfound abilities and makes a connection with Anubis and other Egyptian gods, the Nazis are hunting for the ultimate weapon, and Ziva has caught their interest.

My thoughts

Wardens of Eternity is a historical fantasy that takes place in the 1940s. It combines Egyptian mythology with magical elements and historical elements( WWII). I thought it was a pretty interesting setting and I have always been a big fan of Egyptian mythology. The two elements combined made this story very unique! I thought the world building was interesting and it kept me intrigued. The characters were hard to really connect with though and interactions between the characters felt a bit forced. Overall, this was a compelling read, especially for fans of historical fantasy and mythology. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series. I’m giving it 3.75 stars out of 5.

Blog Tour| Seven Deadly Shadows Review + Favorite Quotes

Title: Seven Deadly Shadows
By Courtney Alameda & Valynne E. Maetani
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: January 28th 2020
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal
Synopsis: Kira Fujikawa has always been a girl on the fringe. Bullied by her peers and ignored by her parents, the only place Kira’s ever felt at home is at her grandfather’s Shinto shrine, where she trains to be a priestess. But Kira’s life is shattered on the night her family’s shrine is attacked by a vicious band of yokai demons. With the help of Shiro—the shrine’s gorgeous half-fox, half-boy kitsune—Kira discovers that her shrine harbors an ancient artifact of great power . . . one the yokai and their demon lord, Shuten-doji, will use to bring down an everlasting darkness upon the world.
Unable to face the Shuten-doji and his minions on her own, Kira enlists the aid of seven ruthless shinigami—or death gods—to help stop the brutal destruction of humankind. But some of the death gods aren’t everything they initially seemed, nor as loyal to Kira’s cause as they first appeared.
With war drawing nearer by the day, Kira realizes that if this unlikely band of heroes is going to survive, they’re going to have to learn to work together, confront their demons, and rise as one to face an army of unimaginable evil.

Alright I’m a sucker for books mixed with mythology and this one hit the spot! The book starts off on the ground running with a huge battle at Kira’s grandfather’s shrine. That night changes her life forever. The pace of the books pretty consistent throughout the rest of it as we are given lots of action. There’s magic, creepy monsters, a wee bit of romance (slightly rushed/predictable but still good), wonderful character development, and of course, mythology! I loved how our MC went from being a timid character to a strong, badass, fighting hero. I was completely immersed in the story the whole time and did not want it to end. I will definitely be looking forward to any future books written by these two!

FAVORITE QUOTES

I am a girl surrounded by monsters and ghosts from an ancient world. Most days, they scare me less than people do.

When people know your weaknesses, they can exploit them. Or in the very least, they’ll think less of you for them.“This mutt managed to set your precious palace on fire,” I say, drawing my sword. The dying sunlight glints off its blade. “I’d be careful, Tamamo-no-Mae. Even mutts have teeth.”“I’m not ashamed of who I am,” I tell her, taking the shards of the Kusanagi no Tsurugi from my back and resting them on the altar. “Not anymore.”

Synopsis: I entertain
naked people for a living. No, not THAT kind of entertainment. I own a nudist
resort. I’m not a nudist, but Val Silva is. And he’s a human supernova sleeping
in the room next door.
The man is
tall, gorgeous, tattooed, and a shameless exhibitionist. As the Brazilian bad
boy of the international football world, he’s as famous for his sextape as for
his talent on the field. Oh, did I mention he walks around naked ALL the time?
A girl only has so much willpower. Maybe we can have a little fun… as long as
his tabloid past doesn’t mess with my quiet life.
Eve Holt is
the sexiest woman I’ve ever seen, in those short-shorts and tank tops that make
me wonder what she’s hiding underneath. Most women love my wild side, but Eve
thinks I’m trouble with a capital T. Okay, she might have a point there. But I
always get what I want, and I want her. I didn’t lead my team to Olympic gold
by giving up. That’s one fact about me Eve is about to learn.
Natural
Passion is the first book in a brand-new trilogy of romantic comedies from Anna
Durand, the bestselling author of the Hot Scots series.

My thoughts
This was a cute romance! Val Silva is a former Olympic star who got a bit of a reputation in the news as being a bad boy. Eve runs a naturist resort, in it for the money rather than the clothing optional aspect. She sticks strictly to no relationships between her and guests staying, but Val starts to slowly chip away at her walls. They decide on a no strings attached relationship that soon begins to develop into more than just a fling (when doesn’t it amirite?) But soon Val’s past begins to creep into the present, bringing Eve into unfortunately.
I thought this was a pretty cute story! It is full of humor, spicy love, and an intriguing storyline. It was just a quick, easy read. All the side characters were well-developed, along with the MC’s, and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

About Anna:

Anna Durand loves romance, men in kilts, and
cheesecake. Not always in that order. She slaves away every day writing about
sexy people doing sexy things together, with heart and humor and sometimes with
suspense. With paranormal stories, she explores the darker side of romance.
With contemporary romance, she delves into the emotional side of love and
sensuality.
Readers and reviewers have blessed Anna’s
books with wonderful reviews, giving her a nice glowy feeling that she’s doing
something right. Her books have become bestsellers on every major retail site,
hitting #1 multiple times. The Hot Scots series remains Anna’s personal
favorite and a favorite among her fans. Who can resist a hunky Scotsman?
Anna also has a master’s degree in library science,
so naturally, she made Calli in Wicked in a Kilt a librarian too. For twelve
years and counting, Anna has run a cataloging services company that creates
cataloging-in-publication data for other authors and publishers. And when she’s
not doing that or writing, you’ll find her binging on audiobooks, playing with

Review | The Rise of Monsters

Monthly New Releases, Review, Uncategorized

Title: The Rise of Monsters

Author: Brianna Jean

Series: Angelus Book #1

Release Date: January 15th 2020

Synopsis: ““What do you do when the world hardens you? When looking in the mirror becomes too painful and using your fists to let the anger breathe isn’t enough anymore? You either drown and die in your own bullshit or you fight to survive.”

Annalise. Lanier. Cabe. Quint.

One fought underground to make money in the slums of New York City. One lived with crippling guilt, swimming in self-hatred. Another fell in love with a ghost, losing himself to his dedication, while the last spent centuries alone, fighting for control of his own mind.

Unforeseen circumstances bring the four of them together, sparking to life an unwanted bond, igniting new and foreign power in their veins, and bringing forth more questions than answers.
Thrown into a game they don’t want to play, they’ll have to rely on each other to find the truth.

Angels. Demons. A war for Human territory.

From the ashes of their pasts, monsters will rise.

My thoughts

“She was going to kill me. Her very existence shattered me eleven years ago, but now? I was a goner. I was her captive and she didn’t even know it.”

The Rise of Monsters is a gritty, dark romance and the first book in The Angelus series. I was completely drawn in from the very first page. Annalisse has been through so much in her 21 years and because of this, has become a tough, fierce, lady who doesn’t let anybody in. She is just trying to get through life when one night changes everything. The night Lanier, Cabe, and Quint came into her life. Now she’s thrown into a world with real monsters( not just the ones she dealt with growing up) . Each of the boys have their own connection with Annalisse and don’t want her out of their sight but Anna just wants to get her old life back.

“Life handed me wings and fangs. If I had to, I’d turn them into weapons and see how much damage they could do.”

The boys in this are all bad bois but with such sweet, soft sides I just wanted to give them all a big hug. There was lots of twists and turns that will leave you guessing at every corner. Also, there’s a crazy cliffhanger at the end. You will probably screech when it happens. I was already starting to guess what was going to happen and then I was right and couldn’t believe it!  I loved the authors witty humor throughout! The plot was well thought out and not too much information dumps going on. Each characters goes through their own form of growth once Annalisse comes into their life and vice versa and I loved the point of view changes throughout that gave little peaks inside each ones minds.  I am not so patiently waiting on the next two books in the series to come out! (still screeching from that cliffhanger tbh)

Title: THE LITTLE BOOKSHOP ON THE SEINE

Author: Rebecca Raisin

Book Summary: It’s The Holiday on the Champs-Élysées in a great big love letter to Paris, charming old bookstores and happily-ever-afters!

When bookshop owner Sarah Smith is offered the opportunity for a job exchange with her Parisian friend Sophie, saying yes is a no-brainer—after all, what kind of romantic would turn down six months in Paris? Sarah is sure she’s in for the experience of a lifetime—days spent surrounded by literature in a gorgeous bookshop, and the chance to watch the snow fall on the Eiffel Tower. Plus, now she can meet up with her journalist boyfriend, Ridge, when his job takes him around the globe.

But her expectations cool faster than her café au lait soon after she lands in the City of Light—she’s a fish out of water in Paris. The customers are rude, her new coworkers suspicious and her relationship with Ridge has been reduced to a long-distance game of phone tag, leaving Sarah to wonder if he’ll ever put her first over his busy career. As Christmas approaches, Sarah is determined to get the shop—and her life—back in order…and make her dreams of a Parisian happily-ever-after come true.

My thoughts

What an adorbs Christmas read! Super cute and a bit predictable romance. Small town bookshop owner Sarah Smith find herself swapping bookshops with her friend from Paris for six months. This is just the change that Sarah needs and jumps on the idea despite being a person who does not just jump into things.  She’s got high expectations for how her Paris escape will go but that all quickly comes crashing down when she arrives in Paris and nothing is as she thought it’d be.

“After all, wasn’t love always the answer? Romance aside, life was a little stagnant, and I knew it was because of my fear of change.”

I loved the setting of the book! It was described wonderfully and I felt as if I were there on the charming Parisian streets. I loved all the bookish tidbits here and there and it made me want to own my own bookshop in Paris. Our MC gets some good growth while in Paris(maybe could’ve gotten more but oh well) and we are given a HEA as the book wraps up. I was not the biggest fan of Ridge, Sarah’s boyfriend, though. I felt like Sarah deserved much better.

This was a feel-good, easy read! I overall enjoyed it. I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars

Title: Throw Like a Girl

Author: Sarah Henning

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Release Date: January 7th 2020

Genre: Contemporary, Young Adult, Romance

Synopsis: Friday Night Lights meets Morgan Matson’s The Unexpected Everything in this contemporary debut where swoonworthy romance meets underdog sports story.

When softball star Liv Rodinsky throws one ill-advised punch during the most important game of the year, she loses her scholarship to her fancy private school, her boyfriend, and her teammates all in one fell swoop. With no other options, Liv is forced to transfer to the nearest public school, Northland, where she’ll have to convince their coach she deserves a spot on the softball team, all while facing both her ex and the teammates of the girl she punched… Every. Single. Day.

Enter Grey, the injured star quarterback with amazing hair and a foolproof plan: if Liv joins the football team as his temporary replacement, he’ll make sure she gets a spot on the softball team in the Spring. But it will take more than the perfect spiral for Liv to find acceptance in Northland’s halls, and behind that charming smile, Grey may not be so perfect after all.

With well-drawn characters and a charming quarterback love interest who’s got brains as well as brawn, Throw Like a Girl will have readers swooning from the very first page.

My thoughts

“SOMEHOW I FIGURED THAT IF I WERE TO HIT THE BOTTOM of my own personal barrel at sixteen, it would’ve been in the dead of a Kansas winter. Snow blowing, skies as gray as my mood, maybe a patch of black ice at the ready to land me on my ass physically as well as metaphorically. Instead, it’s ninety-eight degrees outside in August and approximately 410 degrees in my stomach as it stutters and flips under the withering stare of Coach Kitt.”

Throw Like A Girl Follows the story of Olivia Rodinsky, softball star turned disgrace after a mishap during a game involving her fist and another girls face. When her scholarship gets pulled because of the incident, Olivia is forced to enroll in public school. Her only hope is that she can join the softball team there so that she can secure herself a scholarship for softball. But things don’t go exactly as planned. The softball coach doesn’t believe she has what it takes to be part of a team and wants her to prove she is a good teammate. And so Liv decides the way to show that is to join a team to show Coach Kitt she has what it takes. Deciding on Cross Country as the sport of choice she is all but ready to begin her research into what exactly the sport entails. Until the star quarterback of the football team spots her tossing a ball with her brother. She’s got a killer spiral and he knows that she’d make the perfect backup quarterback for their team. Hesitant at first, Liv isn’t quite convinced football is the sport for her. But the QB is Coach Kitts son and he said he could put in a good word for her. Besides, football is the ultimate team sport. What better way to show she can work in a team?

I found this to be an utterly adorable contemporary! This isn’t just a teen romance novel, it is a journey of self-discovery as well as the ultimate tribute to the world of high school and I was completely absorbed in the story from the first page. I was excited to see how a girl joining an all-male football team would play out and was not disappointed! The chemistry between Liv and her teammates is so wonderful. Besides a few snags( ex on the football team with her) the team accepts her without hesitation after seeing just how hardworking Liv is. And Liv is very hardworking. I felt so motivated reading how determined she was to prove herself. And the romance part! Swoon! I loved Grey. Despite his flaws he was very real and the sparks between Liv and Grey were A+. The world building was complex and I really liked all the characters, even the ones you are supposed to dislike. They were well-developed and lifelike. Henning describes things in a way that make everything so entertaining and I loved this from start to finish. I am giving this a 4 out of 5 stars. Recommended for fans of sports romances, HEA, high school drama, and girl power novels.

Favorite Quotes

I did much better than I ever, ever thought I’d do as a quarterback in an honest-to-God football game. Can I add another “ever” in there? Because EVER.

My pulse stutters. He’s inspecting me, searching for hesitation but actually seeing so much more— and that’s something I’m afraid of.

“I wanted to do that all day.” He winks. “But there’s no kissing in football.” I swallow and compose an answer, lips numb with heat. “Ah, yes, just as iconic a phrase as ‘there’s no crying in baseball.’”

“You’ve got this. You will find a way to win. You will make it happen. Because you’re Liv Rodinsky and you’re absolute magic.”

Husband Material : A Novel

Emily Belden

On Sale Date: December 30, 2019

Trade Paperback

$15.99 USD, $19.99 CAD

Fiction / Romance / Romantic Comedy

304 pages

Summary: Told in Emily Belden’s signature edgy voice, a novel about a young widow’s discovery of her late husband’s secret and her journey toward hope and second-chance love.
Twenty-nine-year-old Charlotte Rosen has a secret: she’s a widow. Ever since the fateful day that leveled her world, Charlotte has worked hard to move forward. Great job at a hot social media analytics company? Check. Roommate with no knowledge of her past? Check. Adorable dog? Check. All the while, she’s faithfully data-crunched her way through life, calculating the probability of risk—so she can avoid it.
Yet Charlotte’s algorithms could never have predicted that her late husband’s ashes would land squarely on her doorstep five years later. Stunned but determined, Charlotte sets out to find meaning in this sudden twist of fate, even if that includes facing her perfectly coiffed, and perfectly difficult, ex-mother-in-law—and her husband’s best friend, who seems to become a fixture at her side whether she likes it or not.
But soon a shocking secret surfaces, forcing Charlotte to answer questions she never knew to ask and to consider the possibility of forgiveness. And when a chance at new love arises, she’ll have to decide once and for all whether to follow the numbers or trust her heart.

My thoughts

This was a sweet, thought provoking story that I really wanted to love more than I did. Following the aftermath of her husband’s death, the story focuses on Charlotte and how she is dealing with life after becoming a widow at such a young age. We pick up 5 years after her husband’s passing, when his urn appears on her doorstep out of the blue and all the progress she felt she has made in processing it all suddenly starts to crumple.

We are introduced to a wide array of characters from her quirky roommate, the mother in law that she clashes with, and her husbands best friend, Brian. I felt the story started out pretty strong but sort’ve lost steam as the storyline progressed. I really wanted to be on board with the whole relationship between Charlotte and Brian but I just didn’t feel that spark between the two. There were dashes of humor sprinkled throughout this otherwise quite serious read. It was not a terrible story, in fact I was intrigued the whole way through it just fell flat for me once I was all finished with it. I really liked Charlotte and thought she was such a strong, snarky main character who had to go through such a terrible thing and came out the other end stronger. I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars.

Advance Praise for Husband Material
“Tackling thorny questions of widowhood and dating after trauma, Belden’s second novel is witty, full of heart, and blindingly au courant. Packed with pop-culture references, it will appeal to fans of Sophie Kinsella, Rosie Walsh, and Plum Sykes. Belden writes twists and turns to keep readers hooked.” Booklist

“Charming.” Publishers Weekly
“Sensitive, thoughtful, and touching.” —Library Journal

“In this touching, witty, and timely book, Emily Belden deftly explores the complexities of human relationships in our increasingly tech-obsessed world. By turns heartbreaking and laugh-out-loud funny, Husband Material beautifully demonstrates that you can’t reduce love to a bunch of 1s and 0s.”
